WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS ***
A mildly amusing romp, thanks in large to the charms of its co-star Cameron Diaz. Always knowing how to light up a scene, the comically gifted actress is in top form in an otherwise generic romantic comedy that has its pulse on its intended audience, women and young couples. Ashton Kutcher is also commendable as the other half of two strangers in a rut who find themselves very drunk and out of control while getting away from it all in Vegas. Together, the two stars have chemistry. What ensues is a sometimes-funny situational comedy that has the unlikely pair forced to deal with their unplanned marriage and a three million dollar win at the slots, which they both want to claim. An absolutely silly premise that finds its heart in its romantic centre but only occasionally is reduced to frivolous and shameless nonsense. Dennis Miller as an acerbic judge is a hoot and Queen Latifah shows up as well as a marriage counsellor who’s hard to bamboozle. As a love story between two people who learn to love one another it works its magic and ends up entertaining. Summarized, VEGAS is certainly a date movie, which basically means that it is a pleasant night out (and probably a much more successful DVD rental) but not much more than that.
