New York - Day 1 : SHREK THE MUSICAL - Doug & Royce & no camera

I am still three film reviews behind but you can be sure that they are coming. Each is half completed but I won't publish them until I feel that they're ready.

Yesterday while trying to photograph Roz and Sheldon in Montreal I realized that my camera no longer functions. Imagine how painful this discovery was for me. Until now I am still unable to find a decent place that will fix it but trust me I've been to several places over the city looking and I am not planning to give up.

Earlier in the morning, six-thirty to be precise I said my goodbye to Dimitri as he was heading off to work. However it isn't a final farewell for the year as I now plan to return to the very cold city on December 11th and stay there for at least a month. Hopefully by then things will get settled and I will be back in work mode.

The flight to New York was an easy breezy one and my old friend Mourad was even the flight attendant which was lots of fun, as fun would allow in less than ninety minutes.

Once in the city, chatting away with Doug, who stayed home to work in the morning, I decided to drop my clothes at the laundromat, as I got so spoiled on the ship, I figured it's all about time as money. I then made my way through the city walking from 88th down to about 45th street across Broadway. Naturally, I made several pit stops, looking to get my camera fixed, of course, and pick up some show tickets. I was impressed that the Metropolitan Center is being revitalized and is going through some major outdoor construction. I also paid attention to the movie theaters that are playing films that are hard to find elsewhere and ones that have exclusive early releases in the city. I plan to find the time to catch these soon as well.

By four o'clock, I made it, by subway, to Lafayette Street, east village around 8th street, and into the Public Theater for a reunion with Royce, an old friend from Montreal, whom I have not seen in perhaps three to four years. He left Montreal to study Musical Theater at NYU and now works for Joseph Papp's esteemed theater group. I was very impressed not only with his job, his knowledge of theater and the people in the profession [composers, lyricists, directors] but by the fact that he's been actively writing musicals as well. He even played me a piece and I was quite amazed. You know how I love this stuff.

I eventually made it to The Broadway Theater [yes, that's its name] to catch SHREK [review below] and was once again struck by the fact that I keep sitting next to celebrities [not even seats away; literally next to them]. This time it was real-life beauty Idina Menzel and her stunning hubby Taye Diggs.

Not bad for one day.
